Skillable Activities make it easy to embed engaging, interactive and outcome-driven elements directly into hands-on labs – enabling real-time feedback, adaptive learning and skill validation within a single platform.
Previously, building activities to validate skills required Lab Developers to write scoring scripts. These scripts evaluated a learner’s actions within the environment, ultimately determining whether they’d displayed evidence of a skill. Now, using Vision Activities, creating activities to validate skills is as simple as taking a screenshot.
Vision Activities uses computer vision to evaluate the visual state of the lab environment – simplifying and expanding the possibilities for how and what skills can be validated. Read on to learn how you can use Vision Activities to bring skill validation to life with no coding required.
What are Vision Activities and how do they work?
Vision Activities are a no-code interactive validation feature that uses AI to analyze what’s visible on the screen when the activity runs. Instead of writing code, Lab Developers write a prompt to define the success criteria for how a given task should be evaluated and scored visually. Built-in tools like prompt testing and feedback, reference images and targeted virtual machine selection help Lab Developers quickly create and iterate on scoring activities.
Key benefits
Vision Activities are a flexible and efficient way for anyone to integrate automated scoring for activities without writing scripts.
- No scripting required – Write a clear prompt, provide a reference image and watch AI do the scoring.
- Integrated help and testing – Lab Developers receive recommendations, examples and real-time feedback instilling confidence in the experience learners will have.
- Flexibility to validate any visual element – Expanding the possibilities for what and how activities within a lab are validated than scripts alone.
- Real-time scoring – Learners receive immediate feedback on whether the on-screen tasks they completed were done correctly.
- Enhanced accuracy – Scores are based on the actual visual state of the VM environment instead of a potentially flawed or inaccurate script running in the background.
Key use cases
Vision Activities assess performance based on the visual state of the environment, making it ideal for:
- Overcoming limited time or technical skills required to write scoring scripts.Time-strapped Instructional Designers and SMEs can now use their word-based content to craft AI prompts.
- Validating outcomes that are difficult to measure with scripts alone. AI Vision Activities enable you to validate outcomes that involve any kind of visual change to the environment. For example, within a data visualization tool like Power BI, AI Vision can check the properties of a particular graph, chart or dashboard, ensuring that the user configured the visualization correctly.
- Creating flexible performance-based evaluations. Because Vision Activities only need to evaluate the visual contents of a learner's screen, this feature enables Lab Developers and Instructors to check performance in ways they haven't been able to before. For example, some proprietary software does not have robust APIs, and historically, this has created challenges for writing performance-based activities. With AI Vision, that challenge is eliminated.
How do Vision Activities support skill validation and job readiness?
Skill validation is the process of assessing, verifying and documenting an individual’s demonstrated ability to perform a set of tasks. This outcome-based learning methodology helps improve the effectiveness and flexibility of training programs, improves job readiness and helps organizations achieve business outcomes faster.
Vision Activities validate skills by verifying whether tasks were completed correctly in a real environment. Use Vision Activities to scale skill validation across your training and enablement program faster and more easily than ever, creating valuable skill data and accelerating your learners time to competency. This feature is highly effective for formative assessments, practice labs and job readiness evaluations.
Due to the dynamic nature of AI-based evaluation, Vision Activities are not currently recommended for high-stakes assessments or regulated testing environments. If you’re considering Vision Activities for these types of assessments, be sure to consult with your psychometrician.
